Schools across Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor, together with Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, were ordered to close on Friday, Oct. 9, as worsening haze prompted education authorities to keep pupils away from campuses. The closure also covers Rompin district in Pahang, rather than the entire state.

The geographical scope was set out by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek on Thursday, according to The Star. She said schools in Perlis, Perak, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan would continue operating normally. The announcement concerns the Friday closure; families should check subsequent notices for arrangements beyond that date.

State education departments and district education offices were instructed to continue monitoring the haze and act immediately if conditions warranted. Fadhlina acknowledged the disruption to parents' daily routines and said future closure decisions would be announced earlier to give families more preparation time, the newspaper reported.

Home Learning and Religious Schools

Affected education institutions were directed to organise learning at home, with arrangements taking account of pupils' abilities, access and needs, as well as teacher readiness, according to Bernama reporting carried by Malay Mail. Teachers and support staff were also permitted to work from home during the closure.

Selangor's Islamic Religious Department separately announced the closure of state religious schools under its supervision and recommended that registered private religious schools follow suit. That distinction matters for families checking whether a particular institution falls under an order or a recommendation.

The Putrajaya Education Department said its decision followed ministry instructions and the king's concern for student safety and health, using monitoring-station readings recorded at 5 p.m. Thursday.

The same Bernama report said 38 locations in Peninsular Malaysia had unhealthy Air Pollutant Index readings at 3 p.m. Thursday. Segamat registered 190, Seremban 186, Nilai 185 and Kluang 181, while Rompin and Johan Setia both recorded 178. These are time-specific readings from Oct. 8, rather than a statement of current conditions throughout every affected state.

What the Air Readings Mean

Malaysia uses the API to present air quality in an accessible index instead of reporting only the concentration of individual pollutants, the Department of Environment explains. It is designed to connect air-quality conditions with health categories and response measures.

An index reading should therefore be distinguished from a direct concentration measurement. The numbers quoted in the closure reporting describe conditions at named monitoring locations and specified times; they do not establish an identical level of exposure for every household or school.

The Health Ministry's haze guidance classifies readings of 101 to 200 as unhealthy and 201 to 300 as very unhealthy. Its standing advice identifies children, older people, pregnant women and people with heart or respiratory conditions among those at higher risk.

The ministry advises people to remain indoors where possible and reduce strenuous outdoor activity. At unhealthy levels, higher-risk groups are advised to limit outdoor exposure. People whose existing conditions worsen should seek care promptly, according to the guidance.

Where Parents Can Check

Parents were urged to follow official updates from their schools, district education offices and state education departments, Media Selangor reported. Its account also confirmed that the Pahang closure was limited to Rompin and that schools elsewhere would operate according to their calendars.

For families arranging childcare or lessons at home, the immediate information to establish is the notice applicable to their own institution and the learning arrangements communicated by teachers. The minister's assurance on earlier announcements addresses preparation time, while local education authorities remain responsible for monitoring conditions and issuing further instructions.
